Wide and Narrow Alleys is a historical and cultural area of Chengdu, Sichuan, that’s composed of three east-west old streets (Wide Alley, Narrow Alley and Jing Alley) and residential houses between streets. The area where the Alleys are located is the place where the “Eight Banners” lived. Starting in 2007, the area was transformed: more than 900 households were re-located, more than 50 yards and buildings of more than 30,000 square meters were repaired and modified; meanwhile, an underground parking lot with an area of more than 11,000 square meters was constructed. On June 14, 2008, the Wide and Narrow Alleys were officially opened to the public. Varied stalls and stores in the alleys sell local Sichuan food, handiworks and books to tourists. Besides, cultural, food and recreational stores including Starbucks and Long Tang Inn are stationed in the Alleys. Being a tourist attract that displays the ancient culture of Chengdu, the Wide and Narrow Alleys have won many awards and titles such as 2008 “China Creative Industry Project Construction Achievement Award” and 2009 “China Characteristic Commercial Pedestrian Street”.
